Born in Thailand in 1959, Vithaya “Pu” Pansringarm moved to New York in 1980 where he went on to obtain a degree in Fine Arts from The New York Institute of Technology in 1985 before moving back to Bangkok in 1987.
After two decades of operating a successful dance studio with his wife, he was discovered by Australian cinematographer Wade Muller who recommended him for his first Hollywood production, Prince and Me 4, in 2009. In 2010, director Tom Waller asked Vithaya to take on his first leading role in the Thai film “Mindfulness and Murder”, for which he was nominated for best actor and best screenwriter at Thailand’s National Film Awards in 2012.
After starring in several international productions shot in Thailand, Vithaya starred in the leading role of “Chang” in Nicolas Winding Refn’s cult classic “Only God Forgives, co-starring alongside Ryan Gosling and Kristen Scott Thomas. The film entered competition and premiered at the 66th Cannes International Film festival in 2013. Vithaya would gain significant international recognition, and in 2014 Variety magazine issued him a publication titled ‘International Star you should know: Vithaya Pansringarm’.
The next year, Vithaya won best actor at the 17th Shanghai International Film festival for his leading role in “The Last Executioner” directed by Tom Waller, as the rock musician who later went on to become Thailand’s last executor and one man firing squad. The film saw critical success in Thailand, winning best picture and best screenplay at the Surasawadee Royal Awards, the most prestigious of Thailand’s cinema honors.
In the following years, Vithaya would go on to feature in multiple Hollywood and International productions, notably as Inspector Zenigata’s right hand man in the successful Japanese franchise “Lupin the 3rd” directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. In addition Vithaya has had cameo roles in; “The Hangover 2”, “The Meg” and HBO’s Strike Back Season 4.
In 2016, Vithaya expanded into the Chinese market and gained nationwide recognition with his roles as a mercenary commander in Dante Lam’s “Operation Mekong” and as Commissioner Chai in “Ip Man" director Wilson Yip’s “Paradox”. 2017 saw Vithaya return to Cannes International Film festival a second time for the premiere of Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “A Prayer Before Dawn”. Later that year and in early 2018, he would break into the Australian and German markets with his roles as Tan in the Australian series “Wanted” and as Detective Gomgool in German series “Homicide Unit Istanbul” respectively. Vithaya’s Cambodian-Chinese film “The Prey" was premiered at 23rd Busan International Film Festival and was selected for the 62nd BFI London Film festival in 2018.
Following his international success, Vithaya would star in one of Thailand’s most internationally recognized film director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang’s “Samui Song”. The film premiered at the 74th Venice Film festival and Vithaya was thereafter nominated for best supporting actor at Thailand’s national film awards 2019.
In recent years, Vithaya has featured in a series of exclusive original productions. Vithaya appeared in the 2019 Amazon Prime Series “Eulenia” and in the Netflix originals “Sergio” in which he played Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid. That same year Vithaya appeared as Ran, in “Deliver Us from Evil”, directed by Won-Chan Hong with Alex Hong from “Parasite” as director of photography. In 2022, Vithaya featured in Netflix’s limited series “Hurts like Hell” which saw him nominated for best supporting actor in the Asia Contents Awards at Busan International Film festival.
Vithaya played General Anuphond in Amazon Prime Video and MGM’s “Thirteen Lives” directed by Ron Howard, which tells the story of Thailand’s cave rescue. In the film he appears alongside Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell.
In 2024 Vithaya ventured into motion capture, featured as Uncle Sunan in “Indiana Jones, The Great Circle” for Lucas Films and Disney’s video game. He was Mu Kun the drug lord in the Hong Kong-Chinese film “Go for Broke”, acting along with Nick Cheung.
He made his Tollywood debut in Pushpa 2, directed by Sukumar, portraying Don Hiroshi, the Japanese Boss, acting alongside Allu Arjun.
In September 2025, He was acting in his second Tollywood film “OG”, directed by Sujeeth, Vithaya acted as Ojhas Sensei, Japanese sword master.

In 2019, he was inducted into the Thai Film Archives’ hall of fame, being honored as the 187th star of the nation. Outside of acting, he is a martial artist holding a fifth degree black belt in Kendo and has competed in two World Kendo Championships as a member of the Thailand National team. Vithaya is also an active environmentalist and member of the Executive Committee to the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand
